Doug Pederson on Josh Norman’s Criticism: ‘Sam Bradford is a Great Quarterback’

By Patrick Del Gaone, Sports Talk Philly staff writer

Earlier this week, Redskins cornerback Josh Norman professed his eagerness to play Philadelphia this fall when asked about Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford.

"Have you ever once been one of the top 20 quarterbacks in the league?" Norman said. "Not that I remember — and you want more money? I can’t wait to play him twice a year."

On Wednesday, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson refused to speak about the derogatory comments made by Norman regarding his starting quarterback, but was adamant that the 2008 Heisman winner is a highly valued player in his eyes.

"I think Sam Bradford is a great quarterback," Pederson said. "He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do."

Philadelphia brought in a pair of seasoned receivers for Bradford to target this season in Chris Givens and Rueben Randle. Although neither has produced much at all through two preseason games, the first-year head coach noted that the duo has been improving throughout camp.

"Both of them have really come on," Pederson said. "With Chris’ skill set — a speed guy — he’s done a nice job catching the ball this week as all of them have done. Rueben’s kind of the veteran, the savvy guy, the smooth, more of the silky runner. Two veteran guys that lead that young receiver group. The other one too is Nelson, Nelson’s really stood out these last couple of practices. Having that veteran leadership is good."

The Eagles committed double-digit penalties in each of their first two preseason games of 2016, an obvious red flag for any head coach. On Wednesday, Pederson stated that offensive discipline is one of the areas that needs polishing on Saturday against Indianapolis.

"You definitely want to see points," Pederson said. "You want to see execution. We've got to eliminate the penalties from last week. This has been the first time we’ve practiced the starters all three days with an in-season mentality. The mistakes should be at a minimum. You want to see that cohesiveness with the offensive line, Sam lead the way and obviously score touchdowns."

Total cohesion among the starting lineman won’t be possible with left guard Isaac Seumalo unavailable against the Colts on Saturday. The former Freshman All-American had an injury-riddled career in Corvallis, sustaining two season-ending injuries in the last three years. Despite the pectoral injury, Pederson says the rookie is not in grave danger of losing his starting spot.

"I’m not going to say [Stefen Wisniewski] can’t win it," Pederson said. "But I’m not going to let an injury keep Isaac out of the starting rotation."
