Just one game remains on the season for the Eagles in another disappointing year.
Yes, the game is meaningless with the Cowboys already comfortably in the top seed in the NFC and the Eagles headed for the offseason once the 60 minutes of play on Sunday are over. Regardless, there is still a game to play to round out the schedule of 16.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
Quarterbacks
Dallas Cowboys (13-2) | Philadelphia Eagles (6-9) |
4 Dak Prescott | 11 Carson Wentz |
Stats: 3,630 YD, 23 TD, 4 INT | Stats: 3,537 YD, 14 TD, 14 INT |
The Cowboys will likely use a rotation at quarterback in the regular-season finale. Even with nothing to play for, Dak Prescott is still expected to start the game and play limited snaps. Tony Romo will also play for some snaps, but expect third-string quarterback and former Eagle Mark Sanchez to get a bulk of the work.
One more game remains in Carson Wentz's rookie year, a solid effort overall, but clearly not enough weaponry around him. Wentz has done modestly well with what he has, but has made his share of rookie mistakes too. If nothing else, a good Week 17 and end to the season could help his confidence heading into his second season.
Running Backs
Dallas Cowboys (13-2) | Philadelphia Eagles (6-9) |
21 Ezekiel Elliott | 43 Darren Sproles |
Stats: 322 Att, 1,631 YD, 15 TD | Stats: 85 Att, 406 YD, 2 TD |
It's been an incredible rookie season for Ezekiel Elliott. He won't get to show too much in Sunday's game, but he'll play for a few snaps as well. Look for more use from Alfred Morris, Lucky Whitehead and Darren McFadden.
With both Ryan Mathews and Wendell Smallwood done for the season, Darren Sproles is the leading back by the numbers heading into Week 17. The Eagles will also have Kenjon Barner, Byron Marshall and Terrell Watson — who comes fresh from the practice squad — to fill the void in the season's final game.
Wide Receivers
Dallas Cowboys (13-2) | Philadelphia Eagles (6-9)
88 Dez Bryant | Stats: 50 Rec, 796 YD, 8 TD | 81 Jordan Matthews | Stats: 73 Rec, 804 YD, 3 TD |
11 Cole Beasley | Stats: 72 Rec, 784 YD, 5 TD | 86 Zach Ertz | Stats: 65 Rec, 677 YD, 2 TD |
The Cowboys leading receivers, Dez Bryant and Cole Beasley, are also expected to play briefly in Sunday's regular-season finale. The Cowboys have been one of the best teams in spreading the ball around with 14 different players recording a catch and seven different receivers coming away with a touchdown.
Jordan Matthews ended up with a solid numbers despite battling injury for a couple games. Had he been healthy, the Eagles third-year receiver may have been able to reach the 1,000-yard mark. Zach Ertz has also been a solid player at tight end when he's been healthy.
Defense
Dallas Cowboys (13-2) | Philadelphia Eagles (6-9)
50 Sean Lee | Stats: 145 Tackles, 13 TFL | 53 Nigel Bradham | Stats: 101 Tackles, 9 TFL, 2 FF |
31 Byron Jones | Stats: 82 Tackles, 1 INT, 1 FF | 58 Jordan Hicks | Stats: 80 Tackles, 1.0 Sacks, 3 INT |
93 Benson Mayowa | Stats: 24 Tackles, 6.0 Sacks, 1 FF, 1 FR | 23 Rodney McLeod | Stats: 79 Tackles, 1.0 Sacks, 3 INT |
The Cowboys defense will likely be rotating players in and out of the lineup, and there are mainstays there like Sean Lee and Barry Church that likely won't see the field much.
It's been an up-and-down year for the Eagles season, defined by inconsistency. The Eagles can end the season on a good note with a solid performance against the Cowboys.
Player to Watch
Dallas Cowboys (13-2) | Philadelphia Eagles (6-9) |
3 Mark Sanchez | 11 Carson Wentz |
Stats: 8 YD, 0 TD, 0 INT | Stats: 3,537 YD, 14 TD, 14 INT |
There isn't much to watch from the Cowboys end in this one. They have been a driving force in the NFC all season, but with the playoffs around the corner, seeing less of the catalysts that put them in this position is simply the better strategy. So what does that mean? It means the Eagles will get to see a lot more of Mark Sanchez, who has one pass attempt all season, an eight-yard completion.
The focus has been on the rookie all season and with nothing to play for but pride and experience, this is a good game for Wentz to just play care free and build on what he's worked on throughout the season.
