The Eagles have a practice squad and it features quite a bit of talent. Surprisingly, no player that the Eagles cut has been claimed by another team. The only player that has signed with another team has been Christian Hackenberg, who cleared waivers and signed with the Bengals practice squad. The Eagles practice squad will consist of:
- Jon Toth (Center)
- De’Vante Bausby (Corner Back)
- Chandon Sullivan (Corner Back)
- Joe Ostman (Defensive End)
- Winston Craig (Defensive Tackle)
- Asantay Brown (Linebacker)
- Josh Adams (Running Back)
- Billy Brown (Tight End)
- Rashad Davis (Wide Receiver)
- Greg Ward (Wide Receiver)
Toth will be an emergency center should anything happen on the line. Jason Kelce is backed up by Isaac Seumalo and Stefen Wisniewski (although moving the latter removes the starting left guard).
After being on the practice squad last season, Bausby was in competition to start in the slot this season, but after a great first game, Bausby made a lot of mistakes in the final three preseason games. Still, he flashed great potential en route to making 18 tackles and was able to make plays, so the Eagles will be glad to keep him around and develop him for another season.
Sullivan will get the chance to develop after playing really well in the Eagles final preseason game. Despite the limited playing time, Sullivan made eight tackles (five solo) this preseason. The rookie will provide additional depth and look to compete for a position again next season.
Ostman was also victim of a deep defensive line, but made quite a few plays. He ended up with nine tackles this preseason. The Eagles like what they have seen and think he will develop into a defensive lineman that they simply cannot cut next offseason.
Craig was also limited in playing time, but managed three tackles. He was the victim of a very deep line in the preseason, but benefits from his practice squad eligibility and will get to stick with the team.
Asantay Brown was a really under the radar player this preseason. He did not make any big plays during the preseason games and was not discussed a whole lot, but the Eagles need linebacker depth and think that they can unlock the potential that Brown showed when he earned All-MAC honors three times and lead the Western Michigan Broncos in tackles in 2015 and 2017.
It was a surprise that Adams did not make the roster and perhaps even more surprising that he wasn’t claimed off waivers. The rookie showed potential in the preseason racking up 103 yards on 29 touches. His numbers would have been even better had he not been hit in the backfield on so many of his chances. The Eagles think they have something with Adams, who they will look to develop as they did with Corey Clement last season. If the Eagles are unable to resign Jay Ajayi and Darren Sproles calls it a career, the Eagles will be glad to still have a solid committee between Clement, Smallwood, and Adams next season.
Billy Brown looked on track to make the team this season, but was not nearly as impressive in OTAs or preseason this season as he was last. He had six receptions for 38 yards, but dropped multiple passes throughout the preseason. The Eagles will hope that Brown develops into the tight end they thought he was going to be this season.
Davis had a strong preseason catching four receptions for 51 yards. Unfortunately for him, the Eagles also had DeAndre Carter and Shelton Gibson take huge steps up, so he was not able to make the 53-man. He will provide a fall back plan should the Eagles receivers sustain any injuries.
Ward was a quarterback in college two years ago and the Eagles are impressed with the strides he has made in his first full season as a receiver. He showed very little in the preseason games this year, though. He suffered a few injuries toward the beginning of OTAs, so that may have factored into his play. The Eagles will look to continue his development this season.
