Eagles-Jets: Preseason Week 4 Preview

By Kevin Durso, Sports Talk Philly editor

With one game remaining in the preseason, don't expect to see any of the big names on the field for either side on Thursday night.

It is a traditional foe for the preseason finale on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field, as the Eagles look to complete an undefeated preseason against the New York Jets.

Kickoff between the Eagles and Jets is at 7 p.m.

Quarterbacks

New York Jets (1-2) Philadelphia Eagles (3-0)
7 Geno Smith 10 Chase Daniel
2015 Stats: 265 YD, 2 TD, 1 INT 2015 Stats: 4 YD, 0 TD, 0 INT

Doug Pederson announced that Chase Daniel would be making the start while Sam Bradford rests in preparation for the season opener. Daniel followed Bradford's solid performance in Week 3 by closing out the Eagles win. He led one touchdown drive in Week 3.

Geno Smith falls in as the Jets No. 2 on the roster, so he will get the start. Smith missed almost all of the 2015 season after suffering a broken jaw in an altercation during the 2015 preseason. Smith's only 2015 appearance came in relief of Ryan Fitzpatrick on Nov. 1.

Running Backs

New York Jets (1-2) Philadelphia Eagles (3-0)
29 Bilal Powell 34 Kenjon Barner
2015 Stats: 70 Att, 313 YD, 1 TD 2015 Stats: 28 Att, 124 YD, 0 TD

Barner has probably already sealed his spot on the team, but the Eagles preserving the health of Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles, he will likely serve as the team's leader in the ground game on Thursday.

Powell has served as a solid backup at the running back position. In his last game against the Giants, he averaged 4.5 yards per carry, picking up 18 yards on four carries. He also averaged 5.3 yards per reception.

Wide Receivers

New York Jets (1-2) Philadelphia Eagles (3-0)
19 Devin Smith 2015 Stats: 9 Rec, 115 YD, 1 TD 18 Dorial Green-Beckham 2015 Stats: 32 Rec, 549 YD, 4 TD
11 Jeremy Ross 2015 Stats: 9 Rec, 88 YD 80 Paul Turner 2015 Stats: 45 Rec, 657 YD, 3 TD

Dorial Green-Beckham is still just looking for reps after joining the Eagles prior to their Week 2 game in Pittsburgh. He started to see some last week against Indianapolis. This week, with no starters in his way, DGB should see plenty of action. Meanwhile, Paul Turner has impressed all season, and now as the presumed fifth receiver, he should see the field a lot early too.

With the Jets sitting many starters, look for two of the more back-end receivers to handle a bulk of the starting time. Smith and Ross were both seldom-used receivers in 2015.

Defense

New York Jets (1-2) Philadelphia Eagles (3-0)
92 Leonard Williams 2015 Stats: 3.0 Sacks, 63 Tackles 94 Beau Allen 2015 Stats: 28 Tackles
59 Taiwan Jones 2015 Stats: N/A 95 Mychal Kendricks 2015 Stats: 86 Tackles, 3.0 Sacks
34 Dion Bailey 2015 Stats: 22 Tackles 22 Nolan Carroll 2015 Stats: 57 Tackles, 2 INT

Beau Allen has quietly had a solid preseason. It's a big game for Mychal Kendricks, who last week was still in the game with the backups into the fourth quarter. Nolan Carroll has also emerged as the Eagles strongest and most consistent member of the secondary on the field in the preseason.

Much like the offense, the Jets will be using mostly backups in the starting lineup on defense for Thursday's game.

Player to Watch

New York Jets (1-2) Philadelphia Eagles (3-0)
7 Geno Smith 51 Steven Means
2015 Stats: 265 YD, 2 TD, 1 INT 2015 Stats: N/A

Means has turned heads all preseason. With one game left in the preseason and a spot on the roster up for grabs, the motivated pass rusher will be one to keep an eye on in the finale.

Smith has starter potential, but got lost in the shuffle last season with Fitzpatrick playing well. He may be the clear No. 2 for the Jets, but for a team that may be looking for a starting quarterback, the Jets could use this game as an audition for Smith to see if there is a desperate team out there willing to move a mid-round pick for the services of Smith.

  • A win on Thursday would mark the third time the Eagles have gone 4-0 in the preseason in franchise history.
  • The Eagles have won three of their last five preseason games against the Jets, with their most recent win being a 37-7 victory at home on Aug. 28, 2014. The Eagles are a perfect 10-0 against the Jets in the regular season.
