Usually when a team has been struggling, a team leader speaks out on the current state of the locker room. Remember when Aaron Rodgers said, "Five letters here just for everybody out there: R-E-L-A-X," when the team started off the season 1-2 in 2014?
That is arguably the most famous line of his career thus far. In the Philadelphia Eagles locker room we hear…crickets chirping.
On a good day, Malcolm Jenkins may speak with a few inspired words, but besides that, everyone is quiet. The team is on a three-game losing streak and only one leader has yet to speak out.
This Sunday, the Eagles host their NFC East rival Washington Redskins, who are on a two-game losing streak themselves. The Redskins are entering this game with the DeSean Jackson rumors flying around and it certainly is in their heads.
Head coach Doug Pederson said that he needs his team leaders to wake up and step it up. He hopes for them to turn this season around and give the fans something to cheer about before it is too late — despite the fact that it likely is.
So let’s go over the leaders who should step it up.
Most fans would consider the team leader to be rookie quarterback Carson Wentz. Although Wentz is a leader and anchors the offense, he hasn’t had the greatest performances, so he isn’t one to speak out at this time. In the first three weeks of the season, Wentz was 66-for-102 with five touchdown passes and no interceptions. In the last three weeks, the North Dakota native is 83-for-141 with three touchdown passes. Wentz managed to throw six interceptions since Nov. 20, and according to offensive coordinator Frank Reich, the losses are getting to Carson’s head.
Connor Barwin is always out helping the community. He is a man who loves giving back to the environment. Sadly, he hasn’t been giving the Philly fans any reason to cheer for him this season.
Barwin only has four sacks and 14 tackles this year, which isn’t good compared to last season's numbers where he was one tackle shy of 45 on the year. He has been in the league for eight years and is well-liked among teammates and media members. But he needs to be more vocal and give the team, and more specifically the linebackers, more confidence.
The next man who needs to be a team leader is Jon Dorenbos. Yes, the long snapper.
Why should the long snapper be a team leader? Dorenbos is a guy who always gets the attention of his teammates. There has not a bad word said about No. 46 and that would help his message and motivation get across to the team.
After performing and making it to the final episode of America’s Got Talent, Dorenbos has gained a ton of media exposure. The 5-7 Eagles will need a leader to help them end this drought they have had as of late. Perhaps the magic man can pull a couple tricks out of his sleeve and have the Eagles leaving the Linc on Sunday with the win.
