Make no mistake about it, the Eagles aren’t messing around when it comes to their search for new wide receivers.
The list increasingly grew over the weekend, with reports circulating that the team would target Pierre Garcon and Alshon Jeffery in the offseason, joining names like Kenny Stills, DeSean Jackson and an ongoing trade rumor involving Torrey Smith.
There is no perfect answer in free agency, but the Eagles desperately need a weapon for Carson Wentz and seem determined as ever to find one in free agency.
Cap space is a concern for the Eagles as the offseason begins. Wide receiver is also not the only hole the team has to fill moving forward. That said, the wide receiver position is one of the few the Eagles could truly improve through free agency.
The Eagles have been burned by underperforming cornerbacks acquired through trade or free agency in the past. They seem poised to take a defensive player of some sort, with cornerback being the most likely option, in the first round of the Draft. Offensive line help is better molded through the Draft than by signings.
But the wide receiver position, while not overly rich this offseason, provides improvements at the very least. As the list of names grows, the Eagles will almost certainly sign someone of note at the position this offseason and it will be an instant improvement.
Again, there is no truly right way to do this. The Eagles will sign a receiver of note and expectations will instantly come pouring in. And chances are those expectations will not be met at some point during the season, whether through a bad game of drops or a costly penalty in a big spot.
But what the Eagles are doing is right. They are looking at all options, and that doesn’t even begin to include the group of wide receivers entering the Draft in April. Don’t be surprised if the Eagles use a mid-round pick on a receiver, simply to take a flyer.
While there is going to be skepticism surrounding players like Jackson — age and money — or Jeffery — is the cost too much for the Eagles? — the Eagles should be in this position. Not with how they have drafted.
They used a second-round pick on Jordan Matthews. They used a first-round pick on Nelson Agholor. Agholor has been a complete disappointment and Matthews has been a solid receiver who is simply not playing in the role where he would best be utilized. They acquired Dorial Green-Beckham last season with the hopes that he would improve red zone offense. He also couldn’t solve the Eagles woes at the position.
So it has come to this. The Eagles need to find a quick fix to start the turnaround at the receiver position, something to try to revitalize Matthews, Agholor and Green-Beckham, someone who can spread the field and be a force in the passing game for the team to open things up for the rest.
Could that guy be Alshon Jeffery? Could it mean the return of DeSean Jackson? Or is it someone else?
No matter what, the Eagles are already making preparations for changes to come at the wide receiver position, and leaving no stone unturned when it comes to reviewing the options.
