Philadelphia Eagles receivers and tight ends have had some trouble securing passes through the first week of training camp. Following Monday’s practice, offensive coordinator Frank Reich sounded similar to coach Herman Boone of Remember the Titans when asked whether he is pleased with the pass catchers thus far.
"As a coach you don’t want any drops, so no," Reich said. "You want 100 percent catches. It’s something that you get in the groove, we always gotta command the best of ourselves. We expect perfection."
The former San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator noted that simplicity is one of Sam Bradford’s strengths on the field.
"His accuracy, timing, I think one of Sam’s strengths, he’s got many, but he keeps it real simple," Reich said. "And it’s not because he has to, it’s because that’s the best way to play football. You wanna have a sophisticated understanding of everything, but yet still keep it simple.
"That’s really what we try to teach and ingrain in the guys, when you teach a system, and when you teach all the options that are available, his job is to keep it simple, to see the coverage but yet to narrow it down in his progression because at the end of the day it’s about matchups, it’s about finding little windows and I think he has a very instinctive and natural way of doing that, and then he’s very accurate with the ball."
Now eight practices into camp, Reich also praised Carson Wentz for a solid start to his first pro camp.
"Carson’s been good, he’s had a great start in my opinion," Reich said. "His grasp of the offense is as good as you can expect for this time. Fundamentally he looks rock solid, you know always getting better, throwing the ball well, so, very pleased with his progress."
Wentz totaled three touchdowns as the Eagles worked on red zone offense this morning, including one with his legs against the first-team defense.
