Eagles Offseason Outlook: Safeties/Specialists

By Tucker Bagley, Sports Talk Philly staff writer

After documenting the holes and needs on the Eagles roster throughout this series, it is nice to end on a positive note. After years of struggling to find a proper replacement for Brian Dawkins, the Birds seem to have their answer at safety with Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod, a pair of players whose skills complement each other well.

Meanwhile, on special teams, Dave Fipp's unit has topped both Football Outsiders' and Rick Gosselin's yearly special teams rankings. With the exception of Carson Wentz, the special teams and safeties may be the most promising parts of this roster.

Who's Here?

Jenkins, McLeod, Chris Maragos and Terrence Brooks are the safeties under contract for 2017. Jaylen Watkins is an exclusive rights free agent, so the Eagles will have to make a decision on him in the near future.

As for special teams, Caleb Sturgis is signed through 2017 and Donnie Jones is under contract for the next three seasons. Long snappers Jon Dorenbos and Rick Lovato are both signed to long-term deals.

Who Stays?

Jenkins and McLeod are both signed through 2020. Maragos just signed an extension through 2019, so those three are locked in for the foreseeable future.

Both Brooks and Watkins played well in limited action last year, and it will be interesting to see if the Eagles want to retain both or keep Brooks and replace Watkins with someone younger. With Watkins versatility and familiarity with Jim Schwartz's defense, it may just make sense for the Eagles to keep the unit intact for 2017.

For the special teamers, Sturgis looked the part of an elite kicker in 2016 and should enter 2017 with no competition for his spot. Jones also played very well last year, but at 36, his age may start to become a factor.

As for the long snappers, it is still Dorenbos' job to lose.

Who Goes?

Of the men currently on the roster, Lovato is the only guy who doesn't seem to have a spot on the 53-man roster. However, if Dorenbos is unable to recover from his season-ending wrist surgery, Lovato can supplant him as the team's long snapper.

Who's Available?

The draft is full of top-flight safeties, but with Jenkins and McLeod in the fold, the Eagles aren't in need of a starter. Expect them to address other needs with their draft picks. At best, they will draft a versatile defensive back like Watkins who could play cornerback or safety in the NFL.

The Birds will probably look to add a young punter into the mix after the draft as well.
