The Eagles have a lot of moving parts on their roster right now, but one position that should remain relatively untouched through the offseason is tight end.
With three veterans at the top of their depth chart, it seems like they are set for 2017, but Howie Roseman may have a trick up his sleeve.
Who's Here?
The Eagles started, and finished, 2016 with Zach Ertz, Brent Celek and Trey Burton on their active roster. They signed practice squad member Anthony Denham to a reserve/future contract earlier this month.
Who Stays?
Ertz has proven to be an elite tight end over the past two seasons and should enter 2017 as Carson Wentz's favorite weapon. It will be the first time in Ertz's career that he's experienced quarterback stability and he should be able to hit the ground running in Week 1, instead of waiting until December to turn it on.
The Eagles made their intentions known with Celek when they signed him to a contract extension last offseason. With his time in the NFL winding down, it wouldn't be surprising if he hangs up his pads after next season, but expect him to be a solid contributor in 2017.
As for Burton, he's currently a restricted free agent and I would expect the Eagles to do everything in their power to make sure he's suiting up in midnight green next season. Burton has developed nicely from undrafted darling to special teams ace to offensive weapon. He's not going to be a game-changer, but Burton is a solid player who will be able to contribute for years to come.
Who Goes?
I can't imagine Denham carving out a roster spot. The Eagles will probably sign another tight end or two after the draft and those guys could compete for a practice squad, but outside of that, there really isn't any room on the roster for a fourth tight end.
Who's Available?
The one exception to that rule is if they find a guy who could line up at fullback in addition to playing tight end. The Eagles used Beau Allen as a fullback last year and Dillon Gordon got some reps at fullback too, but the defensive tackle and offensive tackle will probably need to focus on their own positions in 2017 and it would be smart for the Eagles to find a guy who could line up in the backfield and pave the way for Wendell Smallwood and the rest of the Eagles running backs.
One guy who could be an interesting fit is Patriots fullback James Develin. The 28-year-old has local ties and could bring a championship pedigree to the Eagles while filling a vital role on the offense. However, Bill Belichick is a pretty smart guy and may not want to let a cheap weapon walk out the door.
Instead, the Eagles will probably target some versatile guys following the draft in hopes of striking gold again.
