In Week 1, it was five turnovers. In Week 2, it was four. No matter what the number is, the Eagles defense is finding a way to take the ball away.

That was the focus for Doug Pederson after the Eagles 17-0 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he made sure to compliment the defense after the win.

"Bottom line is you want to win the game and that's the positive right there," Pederson said. "You look at the four turnovers, which is tremendous on defense, some great individual efforts. Nolan Carroll, the way he started the game and the way he played, it's great to see him play like that. Aaron Grymes picking it in the corner of the endzone was a big-time play for us."

Pederson attributed the defensive success to all positions. He said the pressure from the line is playing a factor in putting players in position to make plays in the secondary.

"Takeaways can start with your defensive line and the pressure we've put on these quarterbacks," Pederson said. "And then the guys are just making great plays. Balls are catchable and our guys are in position to make plays and they're doing it. I've been real excited to watch our guys these last couple weeks. Nine turnovers in two weeks is pretty good."

The Eagles shutout win did not go without some flaws. The Eagles committed 13 penalties, one more than in their Week 1 win, and saw the growing pains of having to mix in players to the offensive line.

"Some of the things we've got to clean up, obviously, are the penalties," Pederson said. "Those things are killing some explosive plays offensively. We've just got to make sure our alignments are right. It's a couple of young guys, whether it's the excitement of the game or nerves, they have just got to be more focused in those situations. Overall, it's a win and I'm happy for the guys."

Despite the penalties, the offense started to show some signs of consistency. While Sam Bradford didn't have a standout performance, he and Chase Daniel both led effective drives that contributed 10 of the Eagles 17 points.

"We only had four plays in the first quarter but we really rebounded and put a nice drive together to score the three points right before the half," Pederson said. "Part of that drive and the one before that, we were moving and a couple penalties caused us to stop that drive. But I was pleased with how the offense was able to move the ball in the second quarter."

Two players that are getting a lot of attention are wide receiver Paul Turner and newcomer Dorial Green-Beckham. Turner had three catches for 44 yards, including a spectacular one-handed grab. The undrafted free agent who has become a highlight reel of sorts at practice had his in-game moment and Pederson is taking notice.

"He's really beginning to stand out," Pederson said. "He made a couple good catches tonight. He's a kid that comes to work every day, a hard worker, nose to the grind. He doesn't say much but just does his job. I'm pleased with where he's at right now."

As for Green-Beckham, there was no highlights from him in the first game. The new receiver took a few snaps and was targeted once in the endzone. Pederson hopes to showcase him more in the coming weeks, but wasn't going to hesitate at the chance to get him into the game in Pittsburgh.

"My decision was to let him play and let him see what he can do," Pederson said. "We had a chance to give him a throw in the endzone, just a little underthrown. I think it was a good start for him to get his feet wet. We have a long way to go with him learning our playbook but it was good to get him some snaps."

Pederson added that the starting group will get more time in the Eagles next game on Aug. 27 in Indianapolis as the preparations for the season and the roster start to take shape. The Eagles Week 3 game against the Colts starts at 7 p.m. next Saturday.
