Eight days after cutting receiver Josh Huff, Eagles’ coach Doug Pederson announced today that the team has promoted cornerback Aaron Grymes to their 53-man roster.
Grymes is expected to be active against Atlanta after Leodis McKelvin suffered yet another setback to his nagging hamstring injury in yesterday’s practice.
There is a sect of fans who've yearned for the Eagles’ brass to give preseason star Paul Turner a chance at the final roster spot, particularly given the ineffectiveness of the receiving corps in recent weeks.
Ultimately, a depleted secondary gave the front office no choice but to promote the former Edmonton Eskimo.
“Aaron Grymes will be the guy,” Pederson said. “No. 1, he came back extremely healthy and in shape, and it was good to see. The way he jumped in on all the special teams reps that he was getting, the service team reps defensively against our offense, and the way he was moving. He’s a smart kid and he really picked up where he left off there in training camp. [We’re] very comfortable in making this decision.”
Pederson’s squad has steadily descended to the cellar of the NFL East standings after a shocking 3-0 start to the year. Early on, his offense was firing on all cylinders with cohesiveness and a steady diet of runs to take the pressure off of their rookie signal-caller.
Lately, Carson Wentz hasn’t been able to find his rhythm early in games, and subsequently, Philadelphia has dropped four of their last five contests. All four losses came on the road, while the team remains undefeated at home.
“I do stress [winning at home],” Pederson said. “I stressed it all the way back in the offseason. You’re playing in front if your crowd, and you feed off of that. You’ve gotta take care of the eight home games that you have, and ultimately if you split on the road games, obviously is a pretty good record at the end of the year. A lot of it has to do with the crowd, and the way they fill the stands, the noise, and making it hard for opponents to come in here and play.”
Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz mentioned yesterday that the three-man rotation at defensive tackle has been wearing on his unit in recent weeks. With starter Bennie Logan returning from injury this weekend, Pederson was asked if he expects Logan’s reemergence to boost the defensive front, a group that was playing with tremendous viciousness before he was sidelined.
“I think with the addition of Bennie coming back, now getting more of a rotation will definitely help [Fletcher Cox],” Pederson said. “You just missed [Logan] from a numbers standpoint, these last few weeks we’ve played with three [defensive tackles]. It’s a little bit harder, it stressed them a little bit more. The addition of Bennie will keep these guys fresh.”
As for key injuries, left guard Allen Barbre (left hamstring) is officially out against Atlanta, while McKelvin and Brent Celek (ribs) will be listed as questionable for Sunday’s tilt.
