With the Eagles now dropped to 5-7 after another uninspired loss last week, just four games remain in the 2016 season. Even with much of the focus shifting to the offseason already, the Eagles players can certainly shed some light on what the roster could look like next season based on their play in the final four week.
That starts with the first of three more divisional games for the Eagles, as they play host to the Washington Redskins on Sunday.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
Quarterbacks
Washington Redskins (6-5-1) | Philadelphia Eagles (5-7) |
8 Kirk Cousins | 11 Carson Wentz |
Stats: 3,811 YD, 21 TD, 8 INT | Stats: 2,901 YD, 12 TD, 11 INT |
Despite his solid numbers, Kirk Cousins isn't leading the Redskins to a division title this season. That said, he has carved up the Eagles defense in years past and with the defense currently in a rut, he'll be looking to take advantage.
Carson Wentz has let his confidence get rattled by the team's overall results. Last Sunday's loss in Cincinnati was also his worst to date. With losses coming in three straight games and five of the last six, the rookie needs to step up to get his team back in the win column.
Running Backs
Washington Redskins (6-5-1) | Philadelphia Eagles (5-7) |
32 Robert Kelley | 24 Ryan Mathews |
Stats: 112 Att, 524 YD, 4 TD | Stats: 102 Att, 427 YD, 7 TD |
Robert Kelley was strong on the ground in his last game against the Eagles with five carries for 59 yards, but it was Matt Jones who ran away with things, gaining 135 yards on 16 carries.
Ryan Mathews was a full participant in practice this week and figures to be back along with Wendell Smallwood and Darren Sproles. With the last two games getting out of hand early, the Eagles haven't been able to establish much of a running game, something they'll look to improve on this week.
Wide Receivers
Washington Redskins (6-5-1) | Philadelphia Eagles (5-7)
80 Jamison Crowder | Stats: 58 Rec, 767 YD, 7 TD | 81 Jordan Matthews | Stats: 57 Rec, 686 YD, 3 TD |
88 Pierre Garcon | Stats: 59 Rec, 714 YD, 2 TD | 86 Zach Ertz | Stats: 47 Rec, 452 YD, 2 TD |
The Redskins have a number of weapons for Kirk Cousins. Jamison Crowder and Pierre Garcon lead the way in receiving yards, but with DeSean Jackson, Josh Doctson and Jordan Reed all serving as options, it could be a long day for the Eagles secondary.
The good news for the Eagles is that they should get Jordan Matthews back in the lineup. The bad is that they could lose a potential weapon like Dorial Green-Beckham, who is questionable for Sunday's game, and still have a host of fill-ins running the show.
Defense
Washington Redskins (6-5-1) | Philadelphia Eagles (5-7)
51 Will Compton | Stats: 97 Tackles, 1 INT, 4 TFL | 53 Nigel Bradham | Stats: 79 Tackles, 1.0 Sacks, 1 INT |
91 Ryan Kerrigan | Stats: 29 Tackles, 10.0 Sacks, 1 FF | 23 Rodney McLeod | Stats: 68 Tackles, 3 TFL, 3 INT |
93 Trent Murphy | Stats: 35 Tackles, 8.0 Sacks, 5 TFL | 58 Jordan Hicks | Stats: 65 Tackles, 1.0 Sacks, 2 INT |
The Redskins have a very strong pass rush, headed by Ryan Kerrigan and Trent Murphy. Carson Wentz will need to be alert and poised to move around and avoid the pressure in this game.
The Eagles defense looked pitiful against the Bengals last Sunday. Losses in five of the last six have proven the defense to be suspect.
Player to Watch
Washington Redskins (6-5-1) | Philadelphia Eagles (5-7) |
91 Ryan Kerrigan | 11 Carson Wentz |
Stats: 29 Tackles, 10.0 Sacks, 1 FF | Stats: 2,901 YD, 12 TD, 11 INT |
Kerrigan took control of the Eagles last meeting with the Redskins with four tackles and 2.5 sacks. Always have an eye on No. 91 when the Washington defense is on the field.
Last Sunday was Wentz's worst game in his young career and that has the rookie in a different position. Wentz hasn't dealt with losing like this in his entire career leading to the NFL, so now he must find a way to rebound himself and see where that can take the rest of his teammates.
