Eagles release Connor Barwin

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network has reported that the Eagles have parted ways with defensive end Connor Barwin:

Barwin enjoyed much success as an Eagle in Billy Davis's 3-4 defensive scheme, but was largely inneffective in Jim Schwartz's wide nine defensive front, tallying his lowest tackle and sack totals of his tenure as an Eagle in the 2016-17 season.

The Eagles save $7.75 million for the upcoming season by releasing the veteran pass rusher. This move comes just prior to the open of free agency at 4:00 p.m. today.

The Eagles have long been rumored to seeking a trade partner for Barwin, but ultimately had no takers. Expect Barwin to land with team that runs a 3-4 defense,  where he is far more productive.

Howie Roseman and the Eagles released a statement following the decision to release Barwin:

Barwin released a statement of his own on his Instagram account:

Thank you Philadelphia from the bottom of my heart for welcoming me and for being the amazing city you are. Laura and I want to thank Jeffrey Lurie, the entire Eagles organization, and all the fans for their support. It has been an honor and a privilege to play for this historic franchise. The Make The World Better Foundation, will continue it's work to revitalize parks in the city. Our current projects at Smith Playground and Waterloo Playground are moving forward and very exciting. I hope to see many of you at our concert this year. I have learned from and cherish every experience I have had in the great city of Philadelphia and every snap I played as an Eagle. From the Lurie's, to my coaches, teammates, mtwb partners, and fellow septa riders thank you! Go Philly, Go Eagles . . . hope to see you in the playoffs!
