With training camp well underway, one forgotten part of the Eagles roster is veteran running back Ryan Mathews, who has been dealing with health issues that prevented the Eagles from completing an expected release. Mathews was evaluated on Monday and Doug Pederson updated the running back's health on Tuesday, saying he was medically cleared.
With that, the Eagles acted quickly in making the expected follow-up move, releasing Mathews.
"We want to thank Ryan for his contributions to the Philadelphia Eagles over the past two seasons," the Eagles said in a statement. "We spoke today and had a productive conversation about his future and the direction of our team going forward. First and foremost, we are glad that Ryan is healthy and has been cleared to return to football activities, but given the current state of our running back position, we feel like it is best for both sides to go in a different direction. We wish him all the best as he continues his career."
In two seasons with the Eagles, Mathews played in 26 games with 261 carries for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns. Mathews also had 33 receptions for 261 yards and two touchdowns. Last season, Mathews played in 13 games, rushing for 661 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Eagles had signed Mathews prior to the 2015 season.
With the recent acquisitions of Donnel Pumphrey through the Draft, Corey Clement as an undrafted free agent and LeGarrette Blount in free agency, the Eagles really didn't have a place for Mathews on the roster even if he was cleared to play.
The Eagles are back in action on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field against the Buffalo Bills at 7 p.m.
