On Thursday, a new name at wide receiver entered the mix: Brandin Cooks.
The Eagles and Titans were both in trade talks to land the Saints wide receiver, according to a report from ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. On Friday, another report took it a step further, as Alex Marvez of Sirius NFL Radio and The Sporting News reported that the Eagles were the “likely landing spot” for Cooks.
Whether that is true or not remains to be seen, but Cooks was frustrated with the Saints offense in 2016, so a move is certainly possible. The price is another story. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network is reporting that the Saints would want a first-round pick in return for Cooks. The Eagles just learned on Friday that they will have the 14th overall pick in the Draft after winning the coin flip.
Make no mistake about it, Cooks is the type of receiver the Eagles are desiring. He’s a playmaker, still very young at 23 and seems to have a bright future ahead of him, something the Eagles would love to partner with last year’s first-round pick Carson Wentz.
That said, the Draft is in Philadelphia this season and it took a trade of Sam Bradford for the Eagles to get their first-round pick in 2017 back after packaging it to acquire the second overall pick for Wentz. The Eagles would certainly like to give hometown fans something to cheer about on night one of the Draft in April, rather than being bystanders.
The Eagles are shopping linebacker Mychal Kendricks, something of note with the Eagles looking to potentially trade for a new wide receiver.
Marvez was also a guest on 97.5 The Fanatic on Friday morning, and noted that while the Eagles seem like a likely landing spot for Cooks, they do not seem likely to sign DeSean Jackson as a free agent.
The Eagles have been linked to several wide receivers during the offseason, including Jackson, Cooks, Pierre Garcon, Alshon Jeffery and Kenny Stills. With the Eagles likely looking at all options, the release of Brandon Marshall by the Jets will likely generate some buzz as well.
But if the Eagles focus is primarily on Cooks, the only thing remaining to be seen is if the Eagles can pull off a deal and what the price would be to get a No. 1 receiver. Free agency starts in six days, so the timing also makes sense that trade buzz is booming. Expect a lot to happen over the next week.
