If the Eagles spent free agency targeting weapons for Carson Wentz, they are spending the Draft trying to build the defense for the future.
That started on Thursday night with the pick of Derek Barnett and continued when they grabbed Sidney Jones for the secondary in the second round.
But Jones comes with some baggage, recovering from a ruptured Achilles that could limit him in his rookie season. So the Eagles used the third-round pick at 99th overall to get another cornerback that should be ready to go from the start of rookie camps, drafting West Virginia cornerback Rasul Douglas.
Douglas is 6'2", 209 pounds and played in 13 games in his senior season at West Virginia with 70 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and eight interceptions.
Here is a look at Rasul Douglas' scouting report.
The first thing you notice about Douglas is his size, very good for a cornerback. Douglas is also very good with his hands, leading the draft class with eight interceptions and proving he can get turnovers.
Aside from the defense against the pass, Douglas has proven to be a good tackler. According to Pro Football Focus, Douglas missed just five of his 58 solo tackle attempts in his senior season and had seven of his 15 solo tackles result in a defensive stop in run defense.
Good in both zone-heavy and man-heavy schemes, this is a versatile cornerback who can do quite a bit, making him a perfect fit for Jim Schwartz. Another thing Douglas does well is reading the quarterback and the play in front of him. It's part of what makes him a good zone player, and that could be a good way to utilize him early while he gets the rest of his game going.
He didn't play much in the press and when he did, he wasn't very good. He does have to watch the use of his hands on downfield passes and sometimes struggles to close on inside routes. His speed was also average at best based on a 4.59 at the combine.
For the Eagles, who had their growing pains with Jalen Mills last season, they will likely endure the same with Douglas, but if he can reign in his abilities and fine-tune his use in press coverage, he could be a steal at the 99th overall pick.
"Defense, defense, defense. Douglas is a long corner. Exactly what Jim Schwartz likes," Mike Mayock said in Douglas' NFL.com Player Profile.
It's evident the Eagles are fully committed to Schwartz's defensive scheme and building around it with draft picks. The first three picks for the Eagles are all defensive players at positions of need. That will bode well for the future, even if the 2017 season and the present is more of a work in progress.
