The Eagles continued to focus on the defense with their second pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. At 43rd overall, the Eagles looked to help fill their most glaring need on defense at cornerback by selecting Sidney Jones.
Jones is a 6'0", 186-pound cornerback out of Washington. He was highly regarded as a potential first-round pick until a ruptured Achilles at Washington's pro day in March hurt his value.
While that kind of injury obviously requires a lengthy recovery and can cause some to question the pick, the noise Jones made before the injury may just drown it out.
Here is a look at Sidney Jones' scouting report.
Before the injury, Jones was believed to be among the Top 5 cornerbacks in the draft class, rivaling the top cornerback taken on night one, Marshon Lattimore of Ohio State. Lattimore was taken 11th overall by the Saints.
Jones had eight interceptions in his career at Washington and added 21 passes defended. He also forced six fumbles and recovered three fumbles.
Jones brings tremendous speed that allows him to cover receivers well. He is very good in man-on-man defense, and doesn't allow separation too frequently. He is also good on the ball and has great length, making it difficult to get the ball past him on passing plays.
One reason Jones fits in with the Eagles is because Jim Schwartz likes to play cornerbacks on an island, something Jones is accustomed to doing at Washington. There really isn't a coverage that Jones doesn't play well. He was one of the best corners in the draft at coverage and not too bad in run defense either.
He is physical and willing to battle for the ball with receivers, but does need more muscle to help the transition from college to pros.
Otherwise, there aren't many knocks against Jones as a player. His draft stock took a hit when, despite completing everything at the combine to several teams' liking, he suffered a ruptured Achilles that could keep him out anywhere from the first few weeks of the season to his entire rookie year.
Howie Roseman said after the pick that the Eagles are confident that with the help of team doctors and proper rehab, Jones can be the player he was before the injury. That would make this pick a steal in the long run.
But in a year where the Eagles needed cornerback help and to at least acquire a standout cornerback, they may have been able to get first-round talent with a second-round pick.
"Popular choice in Philadelphia. Before he got hurt, Philly wanted Sidney Jones at 14," Mike Mayock said in NFL.com's Player Profile. "What I love about him is he's got instincts, he's got ball skills and he will tackle even though he's lean at 186."
The Eagles may go into the 2017 season with a weak secondary and some depth issues, but they added a key piece to the puzzle for the future with the selection of Jones, especially if he comes back from the injury to become the first-round talent many believe he will be.
