With Cedric Thornton heading to Dallas next season, the Eagles added some depth to their defensive line on Tuesday, agreeing to a one-year contract with 25-year-old Mike Martin, per the Philadelphia Eagles official Twitter.
Martin has had somewhat of an up and down four seasons in the NFL. During his rookie year, his best season to date, he tallied 37 tackles and three sacks in 412 snaps. Since then, he's made just 30 tackles and one sack in 596 sacks. Last season, he ended up playing just five games due to a knee injury that sent him to injured reserve. Before the beginning of free agency in March, Martin told ESPN.com that he was looking for stability after playing for three different coaches in four seasons. He believes that despite his recent injury, he brings a lot to the table in a league where defensive lineman are a hot commodity.
"Man, that’s been my whole career," Martin said before a signing-day event at his alma mater. "Here (at Michigan), as you know, and then the NFL. That’s something I’ve just been used to having to get used to, and hopefully I can find some consistency next year wherever I go."
"I feel like I’ve done well. Whenever I’ve had my opportunity, I’ve always capitalized, and for one reason or another that’s been limited these past few years," Martin said. "But my work ethic and all that is something that you see on tape, and I’m always a guy that I make the plays I’m supposed to make and I do what I got to do on third down getting to the quarterback."
The Titans selected Martin in the 3rd round of the 2012 draft out of Michigan, 82nd overall.
