Another staple of the Eagles' most successful era is entering the team's Hall of Fame.
Following the induction of his teammates Brian Dawkins and Donavan McNabb into the Hall of Fame, David Akers will receiver the honor in 2017 on October 23 against the Washington Redskins.
Akers was elected to five pro-bowls, the most of any kicker in team history, during his span with the Eagles.
Akers consistently ranked among the best at his position, with the second most points and field goals made, and the second most points and field goals made in the postseason during his tenure in Philadelphia.
He received the honor of being named to the NFL's all-decade team for 2000-2010. He is also the Eagles' all-time leader in points scored with a 442 point lead over Bobby Walston, who is second on the list.
Akers enjoyed success after leaving Philadelphia as well, including tying the NFL record when he hit a 63-yard field goal as part of the San Francisco 49ers.
Eagles' owner Jeffrey Lurie announced that Akers would be inducted into the Hall of Fame tonight at the Taking Flight for Autism fundraiser taking place at Lincoln Financial Field. Lurie had the following to say about Akers:
“David Akers embodies everything we look for in a player both on and off the field. He was talented, reliable, tough, and of course clutch. He played a major role in the success of this franchise during his time here, but he also loved this city and our fans and he made a tremendous impact in the community. We are proud to enshrine him alongside the greatest figures in Eagles history.”
Akers' philanthropy – David Akers Kicks for Kids foundation – was established during his time in Philadelphia, and aids families in times of need.
The crowd will be littered with number 2 jerseys when the Eagles host the Redskins on Monday Night Football.
