The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to terms with a two-time Super Bowl champion.
The team announced today on Twitter that they have signed running-back LeGarrette Blount, formerly of the New England Patriots, to a one-year deal.

Blount, 30, ran for a career-high 1,161 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2016. That said, he averaged just 3.9 yards-per-carry, which was the second lowest total of his career. It should be noted that the amount of goal-line carries he received likely skewed that number a bit. Blount, who has also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, has 5,122 career rushing yards, a career average of 4.4 yards-per-carry and 49 career touchdowns.
While Blount is coming from a good situation, it's unclear how effective he will be outside of New England. Beyond simply leaving arguably the greatest franchise, head coach and quarterback in the history of the sport, New England has always seemed to stabilize Blount. Outside of New England, he hasn't been as stable. He infamously punched a Boise State player following a 2009 loss while playing for Chip Kelly at Oregon. And the Steelers released him during the 2014 season after he walked into the locker room prior to the clock expiring because he was unhappy with the amount of carries that offensive coordinator Todd Haley was giving him.
Blount is again joining a crowded backfield, one that will feature Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood, Donnel Pumphrey and Corey Clement all competing for touches (and in some cases roster spots) this summer. Blount will presumably split the bulk of the workload with Smallwood, but Sproles and Pumphrey will likely get carries as well.
The Blount signing would also seem to make it a matter of when, not if, the team releases Ryan Mathews.
