On the rare occasion that the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers get together for a pre-season game, it's fun regardless of the playoff implications because it divides Pennsylvania for a few days into picking one of the two teams in the state to root for. Given that both the Eagles and Steelers enter this Keystone State battle at 2-0, the stakes have been upped.
The last time that the Eagles and Steelers met with records this strong was when the 6-1 Steelers welcomed the 7-0 Eagles to Heinz Field on November 28, 2004. In that game, rookie Ben Roethlisberger and future Hall of Fame running back Jerome Bettis led the Steelers to a blowout 27-3 victory over the Eagles. Both teams would go on to have their seasons ended by the New England Patriots that year; the Steelers in the AFC Championship Game and the Eagles in the Super Bowl.
While the Eagles are unlikely to compete for a championship in 2016, the first two games of this season have demonstrated the high upside, both physically and mentally, of No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz. A win over the Steelers would suggest to some that the Eagles are the favorites to win the seemingly wide open NFC East.
From the Steelers perspective, much like in 2004, the team seems likely to compete with the Patriots for the AFC title, having averaged 31 points over their first two games.
