Eickhoff masterful in debut as Phillies top Marlins to even series

Miami, FL – Exactly three weeks after being acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies (48-74), in the deal that sent left handers Cole Hamels and Jake Diekman to the Texas Rangers, right hander Jerad Eickhoff threw six, strong shutout innings in his major league debut.

Both starting pitchers threw 1-2-3 innings in the first. Eickhoff tossed his first big-league inning on just nine pitches, five of which were strikes. In the bottom of the second, the right hander threw nine pitches again, this time on six strikes.

In the latter-half of the third, Eickhoff struck out his first career batter, opposing pitcher Kendry Flores. The Marlins threatened to score with two outs, as second baseman Dee Gordon tripled down the right field line, however right fielder Ichiro Suzuki flew out to center field to end the inning.

The Phillies got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning. After third baseman Andres Blanco doubled to shallow left field, off the body of Cole Gillespie, center fielder Odubel Herrera extended his hitting streak to eight games with a RBI-single. Later, with the bases loaded and one out, shortstop Freddy Galvis hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to left field.

The Marlins intentionally walked catcher Cameron Rupp to get to Eickhoff, but the Phillies' rookie made them pay. In just his second professional plate appearance, Eickhoff hit a two-run single through the hole on the left side of the diamond. This gave the Phillies an early, 4-0 lead.


In the bottom of the fourth, Galvis preserved the shutout for Eickhoff by throwing out first baseman Justin Bour at home plate.


An insurance run was added by Philadelphia in the top of the fifth and sixth innings. First baseman Ryan Howard doubled for the second time of the night to score Herrera and give the Phillies a 5-0 advantage. The next inning, with a runner on first, Rupp singled to left field. Because of a fielding error by outfielder Derek Dietrich, Galvis was able to come all the way home for the Phillies' sixth run of the night.

On his first pitch out of the bullpen, relieving Eickhoff in the bottom of the seventh inning, right hander Jeanmar Gomez allowed a solo home run to Dietrich, his ninth of the season.

Darnell Sweeney, one of the pieces acquired Wednesday evening in exchange for second baseman Chase Utley, pinch-hit for Gomez in the top of the 8th inning. In his second career at-bat, Sweeney struck out against rookie Kyle Barraclough.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, Howard doubled for the third time of the game and the 27th of the season to give the Phillies a 7-1 lead.

Right hander Hector Neris recorded the final three outs of the night to secure Eickhoff's first major league victory.
