The St. Louis Cardinals broadcast thought they had the game all locked up. So, with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning as the Cubs batted, they decided to announce the player of the game. They chose starter Chris Carpenter, who went five innings and allowed two runs in his return from elbow surgery that kept him out all season.
But, without closer Jason Motte available, who was overworked according to Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, the Cardinals turned to Fernando Salas. Salas then served up a two-run home run to Darwin Barney, tying the game at 4. Of course, Motte was used in a 5-0 victory over the Houston Astros just the other day helping create this scenario.
After Carlos Marmol pitched a scoreless 10th, the Cubs failed to score.
But in the bottom of the 11th, the Cubs got an RBI single from David DeJesus. Take your pick for player of the game: De Jesus or Barney.
