The dominance that was the “Legion of Doom” in the late 1990’s for the Flyers was some of the most exciting Flyers hockey in recent memory. On this day, this fabled line was at it again in this tilt against the Montreal Canadiens. Together, they would set a team record with 16 points among them, in a 9-5 drubbing of the Habs.
Eric Lindros would tally a goal and four assists, John LeClair would have four goals, two assists and Mikael Renberg would nab a goal and four assists. For LeClair, those totals would be personal bests in goals and points.
They would chase Montreal goaltender Tomas Vokoun, who was making his NHL debut, after just 14 shots, stopping 10, and would continue the onslaught on Jose Theodore. He would be victimized for five goals.
Renberg's goal came just 25 seconds into the game to open the scoring. Valeri Bure knotted the game at one at 7:57, but less than 30 seconds later, LeClair's first of the game put the Flyers ahead again. Eric Desjardins got on the board with a power-play goal and LeClair added his second late in the first to give the Flyers a 4-1 lead after one.
Bure struck for his second goal of the game to get Montreal back within two just over five minutes into the second. Again, LeClair scored less than a minute later to restore the Flyers lead at three and complete the hat trick. Two quick goals midway through the period by Martin Rucinsky and Turner Stevenson cut the Flyers lead to one and essentially erased a 5-2 lead, but Shjon Podein put the lead back at two with one minute left in the second.
The Flyers lead was cut back down to one with 11:31 to play in the third as Brian Savage got on the board. Again, the Legion of Doom restored the two-goal lead as the game hit the stretch run. LeClair netted his fourth of the game after a great feed from Lindros. Trent Klatt added a goal with 1:23 to play to seal the win for the Flyers, who now had a three-goal lead. But they weren't done there as LeClair nearly scored his fifth of the game, throwing a puck toward the net that deflected in and was bunted into the net by Lindros to cap the scoring with 25 seconds left in the game.
Ron Hextall would pick up the win, stopping 24 of 29 shots.
