The Phillies managerial search began soon as they announced that incumbent skipper Pete Mackanin will be moving into the front office and vacate his managerial seat. One day after the season ended, some names are emerging who could fill a role with the Phillies. Not surprisingly, many have ties to Phillies general manager Matt Klentak.
Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia mentions several names in a piece today on NBCSportsPhiladelphia.com:
Klentak has already begun his managerial search and the early list of hot names includes his fellow Dartmouth alum Brad Ausmus, who was recently let go by the Detroit Tigers, and two current big-league bench coaches, Tim Bogar of the Seattle Mariners and Gary DiSarcina of the Boston Red Sox. Both spent some time working in the Los Angeles Angels organization when Klentak was an assistant GM there.
Klentak's former general manager, Jerry Dipoto, left the Angels for Seattle and took Bogar with him.
The Phillies probably will move quickly as possible in selecting a manager so that they can embark on their offseason plans. DiSarcina, as bench coach of the playoff-bound Boston Red Sox, would have to finish his season before the Phillies could chat with him. Winners of the American League East and a strong club, Boston could be poised to go deep into the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the Phillies coaching staff remains in limbo. In Salisbury's piece he also notes that first base coach Mickey Morandini hopes to remain on the new coaching staff. Since the front office is looking for a new voice, those who remain probaly will be few in number.
