Earlier this week, Cam Talbot's name surfaced in trade rumors involving the Flyers. Some 48 hours later, Talbot is officially a Flyer.
The Flyers announced a trade with the Edmonton Oilers that sent the veteran goalie to Philadelphia for goalie Anthony Stolarz in a one-for-one swap, GM Chuck Fletcher announced shortly after midnight on Saturday morning.
Talbot has a 10-15-3 record this season with the Oilers with a 3.36 GAA and .893 save percentage. In the 2016-17 season, Talbot led all goalies with 42 wins, also posting a 2.39 GAA and .919 save percentage and finished fourth in Vezina Trophy voting. Last season, he started 67 games for the Oilers, going 31-31-3 with a 3.02 GAA and .908 save percentage.
This season, Talbot has served as more of a backup to netminder Mikko Koskinen, who recently signed a three-year extension with Edmonton. The trade allows Talbot to come to Philadelphia to potentially be signed as a short-term veteran backup solution to Carter Hart. Talbot and Hart worked out together over the summer and developed a good relationship, serving as a mentor for the Flyers 20-year-old goalie.
Stolarz, 25, spent the last seven seasons with the Flyers organization after being drafted in the second round of the 2012 NHL Draft. Stolarz made his NHL debut in the 2016-17 season, making seven appearances and four starts. He had a 2-1-1 record with a 2.07 GAA and .928 save percentage.
Stolarz missed nearly all of the 2017-18 season following a pair of major knee injuries. He returned in the 2018-19 season, making 10 starts with the Flyers this season. He had a 4-3-3 record with a 3.33 GAA and .902 save percentage.
The Flyers host the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday afternoon at Wells Fargo Center. Hart is starting Saturday's game, but Talbot will likely not arrive for the game in time to serve as the backup, which would mean Mike McKenna is filling those duties. Talbot may be available for Sunday's game in Detroit.
