As Tuesday night’s game against Colorado got started, there were rumblings that the Flyers were closing in on a deal with one of their two pending free agents in goal.
That deal came together on Wednesday morning, just hours before the trade deadline. The Flyers and goalie Michal Neuvirth have agreed to a two-year extension worth $5 million.
In addition the Flyers also re-signed forward Pierre-Edouard Bellemare to a two-year, $2.9 million deal.
Neuvirth signed with the Flyers as a free agent two seasons ago and performed modestly well despite battling injuries in both seasons. Neuvirth was a standout for the Flyers in their playoff series against Washington, but has struggled, particularly of late, this season.
In 24 games this season, Neuvirth is 10-9-1 with a 2.90 GAA and .887 save percentage. Last season, Neuvirth appeared in 32 games for the Flyers, posting an 18-8-4 record with a 2.27 GAA and .924 save percentage. In three starts in the playoffs, Neuvirth was stellar with a 2-1 record, a 0.67 GAA and .981 save percentage.
Bellemare has three goals and three assists for six points in 62 games this season while playing a primary role on the team's fourth line and penalty kill. Bellemare is in his third season with the Flyers and has 16 goals and 16 assists in 217 games.
Neuvirth’s signing likely means the end of Steve Mason’s career, either later on Wednesday or in the upcoming offseason. Mason posted a shutout in Tuesday’s win over the Avalanche and ranks third in Flyers history in wins by a goaltender.
