If you were looking for any indication as to where the Flyers roster may be heading with two weeks to go before final rosters are submitted, you got a clue on Monday.
The Flyers first announced that forward Anthony Salinitri was returned to his junior team and defenseman Frank Hora will report to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Hora has an AHL contract.
That puts the roster at 55 players left, though forward Derek Hulak and goalie Anthony Stolarz are among the 55 on the camp roster that have not been able to take the ice due to injury.
The groups at training camp practice seemed more indicative of a Flyers and Phantoms roster, though there is plenty of time for things to change.
Among the 53 players scheduled to take the ice, Group 1 featured many of the players who are already guaranteed spots on the Flyers roster. The lines were as follows:
Oskar Lindblom-Claude Giroux-Jake Voracek
Michael Raffl-Scott Laughton-Matt Read
Dale Weise-Sean Couturier-Travis Konecny
Jori Lehtera-Valtteri Filppula-Colin McDonald
Jordan Weal-Nolan Patrick-Taylor Leier
Eight defensemen were part of Group 1, each with sights set on NHL roster spots. Radko Gudas, Ivan Provorov, Brandon Manning, Andrew MacDonald and Shayne Gostisbehere were the locks. Robert Hagg, Sam Morin and Travis Sanheim were all practicing with this group as well. The goalies were expected Flyers netminders Brian Elliott and Michal Neuvirth with Alex Lyon, who should be the Phantoms lead netminder, as the third.
Wayne Simmonds was scheduled to be a part of Group 1, but was not on the ice for a maintenance day.
Group 2 had many players from the Phantoms roster last season. Leier was supposed to be included in this group before filling in for Simmonds. Other forwards included Mike Vecchione, Mikhail Vorobyev, Cole Bardreau and Danick Martel as well as prospects German Rubtsov, Pascal Laberge, Connor Bunnaman and invite Ivan Kosorenkov.
Defensively, it was a similar story. Mark Alt, T.J. Brennan, Will O'Neil, Mark Friedman, Reece Willcox and Maxim Lamarche all played with the Phantoms last season. Phil Myers was also part of Group 2, an indicator that he may not be as high in the rankings for an NHL spot as the other three contenders who were in Group 1. James de Haas rounded out the Group 2 defensemen. Leland Irving, John Muse and Carter Hart were the goalies for Group 2.
These groups were not indicative of the lineups that will be used for the split-squad games on Wednesday, since there are veteran requirements for preseason games that force combinations of veterans and rookies, but the idea is that the Flyers are clearly putting more attention on Group 1 says a lot for only having played in one preseason game and had three days of practice so far.
Group 1 was on the ice from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. and Group 2 skated from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
