In a swap of tough rugged defenseman, the Philadelphia Flyers sent Dan McGillis to the San Jose Sharks for Marcus Ragnarsson.
McGillis was a solid defenseman who had some good offensive skills, note his 14 goals from the backline for the Flyers in the 2000-01 season. He could also drop the gloves and take on an opponent too. Among the Flyers and the fans, he was one of the favorites and probably underrated over his tenure for the Orange and Black.
McGillis' career as a Flyer spanned 340 regular season games over five years. In each of those seasons, the Flyers made the playoffs and he added 40 more games to his Flyers total, scoring 14 playoff points.
The trade for Ragnarsson was peculiar and his stay on Philadelphia was brief. After the mid-season trade, he would play just one more season as a Flyer. At 32, he played in 70 games recording seven goals, nine assists and carried a plus-12 rating.
Ragnarsson would return to his native Sweden to finish his career, playing seven seasons over there, until age 39 and retired in 2011.
As for McGillis, he would bounce from San Jose to Boston, then to the New Jersey Devils before retiring after the 2005-06 season.
