On this day, future Hall of Famer Darryl Sittler recorded his 1,000th career point in the NHL as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers.
His goal in the second period of a 5-2 Flyers win over the Calgary Flames was the point needed to reach that magical milestone. His first 914 NHL points were recorded as a perennial All-Star for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
At the time, he was just the second Flyer to record his 1,000th point as a Flyer – Bobby Clarke was the other — and just the 17th in NHL history to do so.
Sittler would spend the better part of three seasons with the Flyers, averaging close to a point per game. In 191 games for the Orange and Black, he would record 84 goals and 94 assists. After playing for the Flyers, Sittler would skate for one more season in the NHL. At age 35, he ended his career with the Detroit Red Wings.
Ironically, Darryl’s son Ryan would be the Flyers first-round selection (7th overall) in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. Unfortunately, Ryan’s career did not flourish like his father's did as Ryan battled injuries throughout his young career and he topped out at the AHL level.
Sittler was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989.
