Tuesday night's game was the result the Flyers so desperately needed. It just came a few weeks too late.
A 4-0 win over the lowly Avalanche showed that the Flyers aren't the lowest of the low in the NHL this season. That said, a win like this is only worth two points in the standings, leaving the Flyers with a lot more work to do if they want to make a playoff run, as unlikely as it is.
Here are 10 Postgame Points from Flyers-Avalanche.
- One Flyer who isn't going anywhere anytime soon is Wayne Simmonds. The Flyers forward scored shorthanded and again on the power play. It looked like he had completed the hat trick with another power-play goal just a couple minutes later, but Simmonds fooled everybody as the puck rolled past his stick after hitting a Colorado defenseman on Jake Voracek's pass. Still, Simmonds is up to 27 goals, tied for ninth in the league.
- If the Flyers find a way to move Steve Mason at Wednesday's trade deadline, what a way for him to go out. A 32-save shutout where Mason was really on his game from start to finish. For his first start after six games on the bench, he was very good.
- Good for Jordan Weal, getting his first NHL goal. Weal has been a tenacious little player for the Flyers and has earned his chance to be in the NHL right now. With the way he was playing, the puck was going to go in sooner or later. It finally did Tuesday night.
- Simmonds' first goal was shorthanded, just the Flyers third shorty of the season. It was their first since Nov. 11, when the Flyers got a shorthanded goal from…Wayne Simmonds.
- Claude Giroux had two assists on both Flyers power-play goals in the first. It was his first multi-point game since Jan. 14. It hasn't been an easy season for Giroux either and as the captain has gone, so have the Flyers.
- Giroux's two assists on the power play brought his power-play points total to 26, tied for the league lead with Phil Kessel. In addition to Giroux being at the top in power-play points, the Flyers have the top two scorers on the power play with Brayden Schenn (14) and Simmonds (13).
- In what could be his last game with the Flyers, Mark Streit had an assist and played a strong game. He's not a headliner on the blue line anymore, but he's a capable veteran who could help a playoff team. The Flyers would be wise to find a taker for him on Wednesday.
- Almost forgot what it was like for the Flyers to score more than three goals in a game. That was the first time they scored four goals in a game since Jan. 12.
- Ironically, the Flyers first four-goal effort in six weeks came on a night when they were outshot. The Avalanche finished the game with 33 shots to the Flyers 26.
- The Flyers have 20 games left this season. It's amazing what facing the last-place team in the league can do to a team struggling to score. The Flyers may still be able to make the playoffs after all…if they could play the Avalanche for the remaining 20 games.
Bottom Line
This was a nice win for the Flyers, but it has to be bittersweet. Wednesday is bound to be unpredictable. A lot of things could happen. Or nothing could happen. But whatever happens, there are 20 games left in the season regardless. Time isn't on the Flyers side, that's for sure.
So if this is the final game for this group as it is now, it was good way to go out. For now, we wait to see what the next 12 hours or so will bring.
