Thanks in part to a two-goal night from Brayden Schenn as well as points from eight different players, the Flyers on Wednesday beat Pittsburgh for the third time this season, by a 4-1 margin.
Schenn scored his 15th and 16th goals of the season at the 12:43 mark of the second period and on a power play just 49 seconds into the third frame, deflecting a Jakub Voracek shot for his fourth multi-goal game of the season.
Two Flyers whose names haven't frequented the scoresheet this season also scored, with Vinny Lecavalier scoring his first goal since Jan. 3 and Carlo Colaiacovo tallying his first goal of the season. Lecavalier tipped home a rebound from a Pierre-Edouard Bellemare shot, while Colaiacovo scored from the slot.
Between the pipes, Steve Mason turned away 24 of 25 Penguins shots, earning just his second road win of the season. Marc-Andre Fleury was on the hook for all four Flyers goals, and made 27 saves.
Sidney Crosby opened the scoring just 3:29 into the game, with Patrik Hornqvist and Ian Cole earning the assists. The goal was the 300th of Crosby's career, making him the fifth player in franchise history to hit the 300-goal mark.
The Flyers (31-29-17) also played a disciplined game, taking just three penalties — one of which was an embellishment call for Zac Rinaldo after taking a Chris Kunitz slash, which led to a 4-on-4 opportunity. The Orange and Black were also granted five power-play opportunities, and capitalized on one of them.
The Penguins (42-24-11) also entered the game shorthanded, as injury issues and cap constraints forced them to dress just five defensemen and 17 skaters total. They were also without the services of Evgeni Malkin, who was a late scratch due to an undisclosed injury.
With the win, the Flyers improve their all-time record at Consol Energy Center to 11-1-1. They'll next take the ice Saturday in Carolina, and will look to sweep the season series with the Pens when they host them at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
