The Flyers started Day 2 by selecting defenseman Adam Ginning with the 50th overall pick in the second round.
Now that Ginning is one of the newest members of the Flyers, it's time to get to know the Flyers prospect.
Here is a scouting report on Ginning.
Adam Ginning
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 205 pounds
Position: D
Team: Linkoping (SHL)
A defenseman with excellent size, he's a defensive defenseman with good skating ability and hockey smarts. He had an outside chance to be a first-round pick, but went about where expected in the mid-second round.
His upside is that of a top-four shutdown defenseman, good on the penalty kill, good leadership and a confidence in his abilities defensively.
What he lacks is the offensive skillset that has become a norm for NHL defensemen. He's not much of a play driver and doesn't factor into the offense very much.
The Flyers have stocked up on defensemen that have good mobility and can drive play in recent years, so this pick is probably more about stabilizing the defensive zone, getting a guy who looks good on the penalty kill and who has all the defensive tools to be an effective NHL defenseman. It's probably not a stretch to think the Flyers didn't expect Ginning to be available at 50, so they took him despite their desire for a right-handed defenseman because it was too good to pass up.
There's a lot of development that will be required with Ginning, but he's got the chance to be a high-reward prospect. This is also another Swedish defenseman that the Flyers have selected that will likely get a few years to mold his game and grow, typical of the middle-round prospects selected.
He compares to Jacob Trouba and is a smart, competitive defenseman with solid potential.
What Scouts Say
"Makes the game look easy at times and plays a controlled game. Captained his team and provided leadership with his physical play. Played with poise and patience – never seems to be in trouble. Ginning has all the tools just needs time to put it all together." — Dennis MacInnis, Director of Scouting, ISS Hockey
"His skating is better than I gave him credit for originally, and so is his hockey sense. His skating I think will be fine for the type of defenseman he's going to be. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes at the end of the first round." — Recrutes
