The Flyers had two picks in Friday night's first round of the 2018 NHL Draft. They used the first pick to select left winger Joel Farabee.
Now that Farabee is one of the newest members of the Flyers, it's time to get to know the Flyers prospect.
Here is a scouting report on Farabee.
Joel Farabee
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 164 pounds
Position: LW
Team: USA U18 (NTDP)
Farabee played in 62 games for the US National Development Team and scored 33 goals and had 76 points last season while serving as the team's captain.
Farabee comes equipped with a good all-around skill set that doesn't feature many weaknesses.
The winger brings a great two-way sense of the game with great offensive presence. There isn't much to his game that is flashy, but he gets the job done by going to the net, being in the right position and working hard to set up scoring chances for himself and his teammates.
He's got a good shot, but it's his hockey sense and smarts that help set his game apart. He is considered one of the best playmaking wingers in the draft for his ability to get creative on opportunities and make skilled passes to set up teammates.
One of the few knocks against him is his size, but he's still able to use a strong will to be good on the forecheck and skates very well. He's also considered an above-average defender who plays in all situations, so he's adept to playing on the penalty kill.
The overall all-around game that he brings makes him a solid prospect, and since Ron Hextall has yet to use a first-round pick on a natural winger, this is certainly new territory for the Flyers, who add a prospect who combines skill and two-way ability well and should certainly make an impact at the NHL level.
His playing style compares to T.J. Oshie and his potential is that of a top-six playmaking forward. Farabee himself noted that he models his game after Jake Guentzel.
Farabee is committed to Boston University next season, but has the potential to be an impact player in the NHL with his combination of skill and playmaking ability, two-way ability, and overall leadership and work ethic.
