The Flyers produced the stunner of the night with a trade centered around Brayden Schenn to St. Louis for the 27th overall pick, Jori Lehtera and a conditional first-round pick.
With the pick, the Flyers selected Morgan Frost, a prospect who had a solid season, but mainly flew under the radar. So it's time to get to know the newest Flyer.
Here is a scouting report on Morgan Frost.
Morgan Frost
Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)
Center
18 years old
5'10”, 170 pounds
2016-17 Stats: 67 GP, 20 G, 42 A, 62 P, 36 PIM, +15
Strengths
- Offensive playmaking ability
- High compete level
- Tremendous smarts and hockey IQ
- Good skater
- Strong on the puck
Analysis
Frost has good playmaking ability and is a fast skater that can works hard along the boards and can generate a lot of offense. This is another player on the small end that makes up for it with his competitive nature and smarts.
His skills are very strong, with creativity and vision and slick puck handling that make him dangerous offensively. His quick movements can get him out of situations with tight checking and he's got quick hands to maneuver the puck well.
Given his offensive abilities, he's more projected to be a winger at the NHL level, even though he was a center last season in the OHL. His defensive play is fairly solid, but his real skill is in the offensive zone.
Weaknesses
- Size and strength
- Physical play
- Consistency
Analysis
Frost has the raw talent and skill, but needs to hone it in. He's going to require some more development, as his offensive abilities are good and his defensive play is average, but he lacks the consistency needed for the NHL.
A lot of that has to do with Frost's size. He's just 5'10" and 170 pounds, so he needs to add to that to become a stronger player and be more physical on the ice. He has a lot of potential in the offensive zone, but he needs to put it together on a more frequent basis.
What Scouts Say
"Good offensive skills. Finds open ice and was an offensive threat all night. Great skater with very good edge control. Has ability to find loose pucks due to very good instincts. Has a potential to play at a high level but needs to learn to play in traffic better but will be a good pick for an NHL team." – ISS Hockey Scout Andrew Degroot
"He's very, very talented and smart and Frost can shoot, but he's not always inclined to go inside. He's so smart and got such great touch. He has ridiculous offensive instinct." – Scout for Recrutes
"Small, competitive player. He's a smart player who plays a 200-foot game. Reliable defensively, always on the good side of the puck. Good speed and skills. Strong on faceoffs. Plays both special teams. His game could translate into a good role player, bottom 6, at the NHL level with some development." – ISS Hockey Scout Phil Myre.
Projection: Bottom-6 Role Forward
