The Flyers were able to clinch their spot in the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a dominant 5-0 win over the New York Rangers on Saturday afternoon.
They knew they had a spot. It would take Saturday night's results to discover who the Flyers would face in the first round.
The New Jersey Devils lost to the Washington Capitals, 5-3, and the Columbus Blue Jackets lost to the Nashville Predators, 4-2, which means the Flyers will finish in third place in the Metropolitan Division and face the Pittsburgh Penguins, the defending back-to-back Stanley Cup champions, in the first round of the playoffs.
The matchup, on paper, certainly seems daunting. The Flyers were never able to defeat the Penguins in the 2017-18 season, losing all four meetings. In all four meetings, the Penguins scored five goals. Two decisions came in overtime by 5-4 scores.
The schedule for the series will be released in the next few days, and we'll have it for you once it is released as well as a full preview leading up to the series opener.
