Flyers-Ducks: Game 4 Preview

By Kevin Durso, Sports Talk Philly editor

A celebration is in store as the Flyers finally make their debut at home after three games on the road. Prior to the start of the home opener, the Flyers will celebrate the start of the 50th anniversary season in front of the home fans and pay tribute to founder and chairman Ed Snider against the Anaheim Ducks.

As for the action on the ice, the Flyers are coming off back-to-back losses in hard-fought efforts for points. The Flyers erased a 3-1 deficit in Arizona on Saturday before falling in overtime and rallied back from trailing 4-0 in Chicago on Tuesday before eventually dropping that contest 7-4.

Thursday's pre-game ceremonies will start promptly at 6:52 p.m. with puck drop expected roughly 30 minutes later at 7:21 p.m.

Tuesday's game was one to forget for Ivan Provorov. The rookie was a minus-5 and had miscues turn into three Chicago goals. One of the best qualities of the 19-year-old is his ability to learn from mistakes. He should be determined to have a better all-around game.

Scoring has been at a premium for the Ducks in their first four games with just seven goals scored. Corey Perry is usually the leader in that category but has just one goal so far. Like Patrick Kane and Artemi Panarin on Tuesday, all it takes is one big game and Perry has good career numbers against the Flyers.

Steve Mason gets the call between the pipes for the Flyers, following the same pattern as the first two games. Mason took the loss in Tuesday's game after coming on in relief of Michal Neuvirth, who allowed four goals to the Blackhawks. Mason allowed two goals in the third period to take the loss.

John Gibson had his best start of the season on Tuesday, allowing two goals on 28 shots, but still took the loss. He is winless in three starts this season.

  • Recent History vs. Ducks
    • Dec. 27, 2015 – The Ducks defeated the Flyers, 4-2, in Anaheim. Ryan Getzlaf opened the scoring with a 5-on-3 power play goal in the first, but Jake Voracek answered to tie the game. Michael Raffl scored early in the second to give the Flyers the lead, but another power play goal by Corey Perry tied the game just two minutes later. Perry scored again 58 seconds into the third and Shawn Horcoff added a shorthanded goal midway through the period to pad the lead.
    • Feb. 9, 2016 - The Ducks defeated the Flyers, 4-1, in Philadelphia. Wayne Simmonds scored on the power play in the third, but Andrew Cogliano would later ice the game with an empty-net goal.
  • A Look Back in Flyers History – The Flyers don't have an extensive history against the Ducks, just 20 games have been played between the two teams in Anaheim's 24 years in existance, but one of the more memorable ones came on Feb. 2, 2008. The Flyers defeated the Ducks, 3-0, and all three goals were scored by Mike Knuble, who recorded his first career hat trick.
