Flyers Fall to Devils in Overtime

For 60 minutes, neither team could find a way to solve the netminders in Newark. It took 59 seconds of overtime to finish things.

John Moore scored the lone goal of the game 59 seconds into overtime on a 2-on-1 to give the Devils a 1-0 win over the Flyers on Tuesday night.

The Flyers held the shots advantage in all three periods, outshooting the Devils, 10-9, in the first period. Both teams had power plays in the period with the Devils going 0-for-2 and the Flyers going 0-for-1.

In the second, it was a goalie show. Both Steve Mason and Keith Kinkaid were heavily tested. Mason made nine saves in the period while Kinkaid stopped all 16 shots fired his way and the game entered the third period scoreless.

In the third, the Flyers held the shot advantage, 9-8, as both teams got power plays in the final 10 minutes with a chance to break the ice.

In the overtime, the Devils got two early 2-on-1 chances to end the game. On the first, Travis Zajac went wide on Shayne Gostisbehere, who sprawled out to block the centering pass. But moments later, trying to get a line change completed, the Devils caught the Flyers again. Taylor Hall set up Moore for the one-timer that beat Mason to give New Jersey the win.

Kinkaid finished the game with 35 saves for the shutout, his second of the season against the Flyers. Mason made 26 saves in the loss.

The overtime defeat spoiled the debut of Mike Vecchione and Sam Morin. Vecchione played 8:15 with one shot, one hit, one blocked shot and won 5-of-7 faceoffs. Morin played 17:47, leading the Flyers with seven hits. He also had two shots and one takeaway.

The Flyers finished the season 1-3-1 against the Devils in five meetings this season. The loss also concluded the Flyers road schedule. The Flyers were 14-22-5 on the road this season.

The Flyers return home this weekend for their final two games of the 2016-17 season. It starts on Saturday afternoon when they face the Columbus Blue Jackets. Game time is set for 12:30 p.m.
