Perhaps all the Flyers needed was for a struggling team to come knocking. That team, the 2-5-0 New York Rangers, desimated by injury, were just what the doctor ordered for the 1-7-0 Flyers.
Once again, the Flyers failed to score more than two goals in the game. But two would be enough for the second time this season, as the Flyers held off the Rangers for a 2-1 win on Thursday night at Wells Fargo Center.
The Flyers tallied first, scoring at 9:07. While shorthanded, Matt Read came up with a steal a beat Rangers goalie Cam Talbot, making his NHL debut.
The Rangers would tie the game with just over a minute remaining in the first. Brad Richards fired a bad-angle shot toward the net and it was deflected off of Braydon Coburn and past Steve Mason.
A chippy second period between the two rivals added a spark to the game. Max Talbot left the game momentarily after being hit into the boards by Benoit Pouliot. Pouliot received a match penalty as a result.
After failing to capitalize on a five-minute power play, the Flyers would take the lead early in the third. At 3:33, Coburn beat Talbot with a low shot to give the Flyers the lead.
Moments later, the Rangers appeared to tie the game again with a power-play goal by J.R. Miller. But Miller's goal was disallowed after it was ruled the puck was kicked in.
Mason stopped 30 of 31 shots in the victory. Read, who entered the game without a point, picked up a goal and assist.
The Flyers return to action on Saturday against the New York Islanders.
