Max Talbot, who scored the lone Flyers goal in Friday's loss, scored the game-winning goal in the Flyers last meeting against the Detroit Red Wings, a 3-2 win in March 2011.
It seems odd that the Flyers would face a pair of unfamiliar
opponents back-to-back as they are this week. But Saturday’s opponent is one
they need to start getting familiar with fast.
The Detroit Red Wings, now part of the Eastern Conference in
the Metropolitan Division, made the transition from Western Conference play to
the East as part of realignment. They will start to see the Flyers on a more
regular basis, starting on Saturday night at Joe Lewis Arena.
The Flyers faced the Red Wings twice in 2011-12, splitting
the games with a 1-1-0 record. The Flyers scratched out a 3-2 win at home in
March 2011. Prior to that, the Flyers fell to the Red Wings in Detroit. They have lost all but one game in Joe Lewis Arena since 1988, a total of 17 losses in 18 games.
The Flyers made two roster moves to account for the two injuries suffered on Friday. Scott Hartnell and Vincent Lecavalier are out for at least a week. Up from the Phantoms are Michael Raffl and Tye McGinn.
After Steve Mason started for the third straight game on Friday, it is expected that Ray Emery will get the start in Detroit.
Both teams are coming off a game against the Phoenix
Coyotes. The Red Wings suffered a 4-2 loss on Thursday.
Scoring in that game were Joakim Andersson and Jonathan Ericsson. Detroit also possesses the usual scoring threats of Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. Zetterberg has 13 points in nine career games against the Flyers.
The Red Wings are also likely to go with Jimmy Howard in goal.
The Flyers set a new franchise record on Friday and it's not one to be proud of. The six total goals for the team are the fewest in franchise history after five games to start a regular season. The previous record was nine, set by the 1999-00 team.
