There was finally some scoring from the Flyers, but not enough.
In the end, a 2-1 lead didn't hold up, and the Flyers never recovered through overtime or the shootout in a 3-2 loss to the Jets.
Let's get right to it with our Postgame Review.
Postgame Points
- The Flyers got back on the scoreboard exactly the way they needed to, by getting to the net. An early goal was really what the team needed, and they played a really strong first period.
But there's one problem with the scoring in this game. Take a look at who is on the scoresheet again. It's Jake Voracek and Sean Couturier. And while it's nice for any player to get on the board and nice for the power play to get a goal, it's the same suspects scoring the goals.
The depth is still a problem, and while the lines looked immensely better with Nolan Patrick back in the lineup, it's clear how much finishing is a problem on this team.
Not only did the Flyers have other chances in the game within regulation, but there were at least three or four chances in overtime where the Flyers had open ice and a shot in front of them. They missed the net on each of those chances.
- This kind of game makes you feel terrible for Brian Elliott. Elliott was tremendous throughout the game. He wasn't at fault on either goal allowed during regulation and made his share of quality and difficult saves throughout.
If anyone deserved a win, it was Elliott.
But in the shootout, an area where Elliott was really good a season ago, he stopped just one shot.
That aside, in five starts in November, Elliott has allowed just seven goals…and has one win.
- The Flyers were really in a hole defensively throughout the game. Radko Gudas' penalty in the first was deserved and is the type of play that drives fans crazy.
Gudas can play his role really well, but the second he gets out of hand, he puts his team in a huge hole. To have to fend off the Jets with five defensemen for nearly 50 minutes was just too tough a task.
I said a few nights ago that if it's not goaltending and it's not defense, it's the offense that struggles. The offense wasn't great, but the defense was as bad as it's been in some time. A Travis Sanheim turnover led to the odd-man rush that put the Jets on the board on the power play. Shayne Gostisbehere made several questionable decisions with the puck. Ivan Provorov got caught out of position on the game-tying goal.
There are growing pains with such a young defensive core, but the Flyers got way too passive as a defensive unit in the final 20 minutes and it came back to haunt them.
- We talked about depth scoring already, but it's really hard to watch Travis Konecny continually look for the perfect play.
Konecny had a few chances on odd-man rushes and another in overtime. He continually looked for the pass throughout regulation when the shot was the better option. In overtime, he finally took the shot and missed high and wide.
Konecny's another player who will experience growing pains as a second-year player, but boy is the Flyers youth and inexperience and overall raw talent getting in the way during November.
- I said this after the last game and I'll use it again since it still rings true. Through 19 games, the Flyers are 8-8-3, exactly the same record they had a year ago.
November was one of their most inconsistent months of the season too, until a game on Nov. 27 that started a string of 10 straight wins.
The game that night was against the Calgary Flames, the team who comes in on Saturday. Let's all hope Saturday's game is the start of something going in the right direction.

Brian Elliott made several great saves in this game, the best being this lunging save on Bryan Little.
By the Numbers
The Flyers were over 60 CF% in both the first and third period, so they are getting their attempts. It's finishing that has been the problem. This was very much a game where the Flyers had the edge from the beginning, only to end up on the wrong side of the result.
Stat of the Game
There were two problem areas for the Flyers. They were 1-for-5 on the power play, so despite finally getting back on the board on the man advantage, there were plenty of missed opportunities. The Jets were also 1-for-7 on the power play as the Flyers had 25 penalty minutes in the game. A big chunk of that was Gudas' major and game misconduct, but the Flyers showed a lack of discipline on Thursday.
