By Kevin Durso, Sports Talk Philly editor

The Flyers are starting the 2016-17 NHL season with a little late-night hockey.

The Flyers 50th anniversary season kicks off on Friday night as they face the Los Angeles Kings

The opening face-off is set for 10:30 p.m.

You could easily lump Ivan Provorov in this as well. In their NHL debut, all eyes are on the kids. Konecny will certainly get a lot of attention as a forward. Could a couple of firsts for the 19-year-old make this a memorable debut?

The former Flyer has consistently been a scoring threat throughout his career. Carter finished with 24 goals last season, and is a strong performer against his former club.

Michal Neuvirth gets the first chance in goal for the Flyers, getting the nod in the season opener. Steve Mason closed out the 2015-16 season with a stellar second half before eventually giving way to Neuvirth in the playoff series against Washington. Mason and Neuvirth will be splitting time between the pipes this season, but after Neuvirth's strong finish in the playoffs, he gets the chance to start the season opener.

When the Flyers schedule came out, Jeff Zatkoff was not the name you pictured to be in goal for the season opener. But after Jonathan Quick suffered a lower-body injury in Los Angeles' season opener on Wednesday, Zatkoff is in as the starter for Friday night. The Flyers last faced Zatkoff on the final weekend of the 2015-16 regular season, defeating him and the Pittsburgh Penguins to clinch a playoff spot.

Game Notes

  • Power Play: Flyers (T-11th, 11th on road), Kings (9th, 25th at home)
  • Penalty Kill: Flyers (T-20th, 14th on road), Kings (15th, 14th at home)
  • Recent History vs. Kings
    • Nov. 17, 2015 – The Flyers suffered a 3-2 shootout loss at home. Shayne Gostisbeher opened the scoring with his first NHL goal but the Kings got a goal late in the first period from Jamie McBain to tie the game. Claude Giroux scored with 8:49 to play in the third but a goal in the final minute of the game by Milan Lucic tied the game again. Anze Kopitar scored the only goal in the shootout to give the Kings the win.
    • Jan. 2, 2016 – The Flyers fell to the Kings, 2-1, in Los Angeles. Dwight King opened the scoring in the first and Drew Doughty added another goal late in the first period to put the Kings ahead. A power-play goal by Brayden Schenn midway through the third cut the lead to one, but the Flyers furious rally late fell short as Jonathan Quick made 29 saves in the win.
  • A Look Back in Flyers History – One of the Flyers more memorable wins over the Kings in recent memory came on Oct. 28, 2014 in Philadelphia. First-period goals by Michael Raffl and Chris VandeVelde put the Flyers ahead 2-1 after 20 minutes. Former Flyers captain Mike Richards would get the game-tying goal at 5:01 of the third period. But in overtime, Brayden Schenn stole a pass and charged in on Jonathan Quick, managing to just slip the puck across the goal line. While the call on the ice was no goal, video review showed the puck had crossed the line and was ruled a good goal, much to the ire of Quick, who threw a memorable tantrum as the call was announced.
