And the beat goes on. This time, the Flyers spared everyone the drama.
Instead of losing a lead in frustrating fashion, the Flyers looked lifeless in the final 30 minutes, falling for the ninth straight game to the San Jose Sharks, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Center.
The Flyers came out early, getting a quick goal just 48 seconds in. Jake Voracek threw a pass across to Claude Giroux for a one-timer to give the Flyers the 1-0 lead with his 11th goal of the season.
The Sharks slowly started to turn up the energy and generate more chances, finally getting on the board at 10:29. Chris Tierney entered the zone, cut to the slot and used Travis Sanheim as a screen as his shot beat Michal Neuvirth to the glove side to tie the game.
From there, it was a parade to the penalty box for the Flyers. They took two quick penalties, one on Wayne Simmonds for slashing and a delay of game penalty on Michael Raffl to give the Sharks a two-man advantage for 1:19.
The Sharks finally scored with nine seconds left on the 5-on-3, as Joe Thornton looked pass before slipping a quick shot through Neuvirth.
The Flyers killed off the rest of the Sharks power play, but took another penalty with 15 seconds left in the period to put San Jose back on the power play.
Shots were 12-8 San Jose in the first period.
The Sharks were able to control most of the second period, in large part due to a lack of discipline by the Flyers. The Flyers took three more penalties in the period, including two that negated power plays.
While the Sharks didn't capitalize on the man advantage, they were able to pad their lead in the period.
A point shot by Marc-Edouard Vlasic managed to beat a screened Neuvirth to give the Sharks a two-goal lead.
Shots in the period were 17-10 San Jose, making the totals 29-18 San Jose with 20 minutes to play.
The final period was all San Jose, as they controlled the play by simply playing keep away. The Sharks had just five shots in the period, but focused more on keeping the Flyers from even entering the zone.
In the final period, in fact for nearly the last 30 minutes of the game, the Flyers had just five shots on goal.
Aaron Dell got the win by making just 22 saves on 23 shots. Neuvirth stopped 31 of 34 shots.
