In an effort to close up the gap between they and the 8th place Islanders, the Flyers made two trades. The first trade sent LW Harry Zolnierczyk to the Anaheim Ducks for minor league LW Jay Rosehill. No major improvements on either side, as it essentially swaps two depth guys. The second trade comes with a bit more aftershock, as Michael Leighton and a 2015 third round pick were sent to the Columbus Blue Jackets for goalie Steve Mason.
In 2011-2012, Mason amassed a 16-26-3 record with 3.39 GAA. This year, he was 3-6-1 with a 2.95 GAA. This move probably means Ilya Bryzgalov will get some more time off to finish the season. Some also seem to believe it is a sign that he will moved in the offseason, but that remains to be seen.
