The Flyers on Monday named Scott Gordon as Lehigh Valley Phantoms coach — becoming the ninth coach in franchise history.
Gordon brings 11 years of coaching experience from the minor league, professional and international levels. The Brockton, Mass. native most recently served as an assistant under Ron Wilson and Randy Carlyle in Toronto, and was head coach of the U.S. National Team from 2010 to 2011.
From the middle of the 2002-03 season until 2007-08, Gordon was coach of the American League's Providence Bruins. He compiled a total record of 221-141-13-34 behind the Bruins' bench.
For the 2008-09 season, Gordon was hired to coach the New York Islanders. He only coached the Isles for parts of three seasons (compiling a dismal 64-94-23 record), before being replaced by incumbent coach Jack Capuano on Nov. 15, 2010.
Gordon, 52, succeeds Terry Murray, who left the organization last month to take an assistant job under Dan Bylsma in Buffalo. He will retain ex-Flyer Riley Cote on his staff, who has served as a Phantoms assistant since 2010.
