Around the NHL, rumors swirled about Harvard standout and team captain Jimmy Vesey and which team would sign him when he became a free agent on Aug. 16. On Wednesday, Vesey met with his list of finalists.
The Flyers were not one of them.
Vesey's list included Eastern Conference foes like the New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins. In addition, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks rounded out the teams Vesey met with. He will begin the process towards making a decision on Thursday.
Vesey has met with all seven teams on his list — NYR, NJD, NYI, BOS, CHI, PITT, TOR — and his camp will start discussing options Thursday.

Vesey scored 24 goals and added 22 assists for 46 points in 33 games with Harvard last season. In his four seasons with Harvard, Vesey scored 80 goals and added 64 assists for 144 points in 128 games at the college level. Vesey was also the 2016 Hobey Baker Award winner.
This is really a no-win scenario for the Flyers. Sure, due to cap space, the odds of signing Vesey were slim to none as it was, but with so many of Vesey's finalists coming out of the Metropolitan Division, it's almost a mystery why the Flyers weren't a finalist when they are both desperate for scoring and would have almost certainly had an interest.
Now, not only do the Flyers miss out on a potential goal-scorer in the NHL, but he could very well be going to a division rival and have to face the Flyers a number of times during a season.
