With the Flyers season opener just a little over 24 hours away, the team took the ice for practice on Tuesday with their roster of 23 set, but the lineup still very much in question.
The Flyers got the roster down to the league-mandated 23 players by placing Matt Read on waivers on Monday. Read cleared waivers on Tuesday and was sent to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, but the move is expected to be temporary.
The Flyers kept eight defensemen on the roster with the status of Shayne Gostisbehere in question after he suffered an upper-body injury in Sunday's preseason finale. Gostisbehere was on the ice for Tuesday's practice and said he was "good to go" for Wednesday's game.
GM Ron Hextall said he doesn't want to keep eight defensemen on the roster for very long, so this rotation could last through the weekend before the Flyers bring Read back and send one of the other defensemen back to the AHL.
The Flyers forward lines at practice were the same as in Sunday's preseason finale:
Claude Giroux-Sean Couturier-Jake Voracek
Jordan Weal-Nolan Patrick-Wayne Simmonds
Dale Weise-Valtteri Filppula-Travis Konecny
Michael Raffl-Scott Laughton-Taylor Leier
Jori Lehtera was the only extra forward.
Defensively, the Flyers will have two healthy scratches, but there was no clear indication which pairing would be sitting out the season opener. The Flyers pairings in practice were as follows:
Ivan Provorov-Andrew MacDonald
Travis Sanheim-Radko Gudas
Brandon Manning-Robert Hagg
Sam Morin-Shayne Gostisbehere
New Jersey Numbers for Rookies
The cat was already out of the bag for Nolan Patrick, who donned his familiar No. 19, the same number he wore in juniors, at a team event in Philadelphia on Monday.
The rest of the rookies making the trip to San Jose all had their new numbers for Tuesday's practice.
Sam Morin changed his number from 50 in the preseason to 5. Robert Hagg switched from 48 in the preseason to 8. Travis Sanheim went from 57 to 6, the same number he wore with the Phantoms last season. Taylor Leier also changed his number from 58 to 20.
The Flyers will face the San Jose Sharks in their season opener on Wednesday night at 10:30 p.m.
