Less than five minutes separated Flyers defensive prospect Philippe Myers and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies from the Memorial Cup title when the potent London Knights offense struck for the equalizer.
In overtime, one of the Knights most prolific scorers and one of the 2016 NHL Draft's top prospects delivered the game-winning tally.
Matthew Tkachuk's second goal of the game at 7:49 of overtime to give the Knights the Memorial Cup title on Sunday afternoon in Red Deer, Alberta.
The Knights took the lead in midway through the second on Tkachuk's first goal of the game at 9:19. That was answered just 15 seconds later with Francis Perron scoring the equalizer for Rouyn-Noranda.
Midway through the third at 9:13, the Huskies took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Julien Nantel. That lead held up until there was 4:11 remaining in regulation when Christian Dvorak scored to even things up and force overtime.
Tkachuk provided the heroics for the undefeated Knights, who won all four games they played at the Memorial Cup this weekend.
Myers finished the championship game with no shots and was a plus-1 in the game. He left the game late in the second after a knee-on-knee collision with London's Owen MacDonald and did not return to the game, but was a part of the handshake line after the game. Myers had been dealing with an injury prior, but was attempting to play through it. He finished his four games in the Memorial Cup with one goal and one assist.
The next stop for several of these prospects is the NHL Draft, which takes place in just under a month on June 24 and 25.
