For just the second time this season, the Flyers are on a three-game winning streak. It took another comeback though, and the captain led the way.
Claude Giroux's two goals paced the Flyers comeback over the Senators, including the game-winner in overtime.
Here are 10 Postgame Points from the Flyers big win in Ottawa.
- Claude Giroux has been subject to criticism, most notably his 5-on-5 play. After his performance on Thursday, I don't think anyone will be questioning that at the moment. Giroux's two goals were timely. The Flyers really needed to get at least one out of a dominant second and did. The best way to approach the overtime is to gain possession and waste little time. 40 seconds into overtime isn't wasting much time at all.
- Two things of note on Giroux's game-winner. First, if you've ever seen warmups at Wells Fargo Center, that's the exact shot Giroux and Jake Voracek each practice in the closing moments of warmups after most of the team has left the ice. It sure came in handy there. Secondly, remember the overtime on Tuesday? Six seconds left and Giroux let go a very similar shot. Tuukka Rask got a stick on it to deflect it away. Mike Condon had no chance.
- Both of Giroux's goals are not possible without the continuous strong play of Jake Voracek. On the first goal, Voracek carries the puck across the blue line and draws three Senators defenders to him. That allows Giroux to find open space, and when Voracek feeds him, it's a two-on-one down low. Giroux's shot is actually targeted for the far post, and possibly even going wide, but with the two-on-one, it hits the sliding defender and goes in. On the overtime goal, words almost can't describe the power move Voracek used to muscle off a Senators defender. And this wasn't just any Senators defender. It was two-time Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson. Giroux got the payoff, but Voracek deserves a lot more than an assist on the goal.
- Back to the Flyers first goal, which shows the importance that some coaching decisions can have in a game. The play was offside and the blue line cameras caught it. But Senators head coach Guy Boucher used his timeout earlier in the period after Ottawa iced the puck. With no timeout, Ottawa couldn't challenge the play and offsides is not reviewable without the coach's challenge. Credit the Flyers there to some degree. Their push in the second had the Senators on their heels and they were really forced into using the timeout to stay fresh. It worked at the time — the Flyers didn't score until there was 3:10 left in the period — but not having a challenge for later hurt.
- Remember the kind of year Michael Del Zotto had last season. He was great defensively, but limited on offense as a result of the change of pace, finishing the season with four goals and nine assists for 13 points in 52 games. Del Zotto has played in 10 games since returning from injury and is already up to three goals and four assists for seven points. His defense has been spotty at times, but getting better with each game, but it's nice to see him involved on offense again like he was in 2014-15.
- Every game, Travis Konecny does something to remind you just how bright the future is for him. Konecny isn't lighting up the scoresheet in the same way Shayne Gostisbehere did, but he's showing signs that he can be a leader in the offensive zone and use his speed to his advantage. In Thursday's game, it was a circle around the attacking zone that left everyone on the ice watching that was most impressive.
- It's amazing sometimes the vast difference in the style a game takes from one night to the next. On Tuesday, Steve Mason faced 47 shots from Boston, stopping 45 before the shootout. On Thursday, the Senators only mustered 21 shots in the game. Mason stopped 19. Not the best night statistically, but one thing that Mason did get was another win, bringing his record to 7-8-3 on the season.
- The defense as a whole actually played very well in this game. The most improved factor, third-period defense. It was a strategic period for sure, but the Flyers entered the game having allowed the most third-period goals in the NHL with 30. The Senators didn't really have anything for Mason or the Flyers in the third in terms of difficult shots and that's a testament to the defense.
- One area where the Flyers did not look good was the power play. The Flyers went 0-for-4, in large part to the tight checking of the Ottawa penalty kill, but more than that, this was the second-best power play in the league being completely stymied. Ottawa is ranked 13th in penalty kill, but had really struggled in that area on home ice. For a while, it looked like the Flyers wouldn't even get a comeback after wasting so many chances on the man advantage.
- How big was this win? When Ottawa has a lead or is tied after two periods, they were 11-1-0 entering Thursday's game. They also had a 9-2-1 record in one-goal games. Getting another comeback was one thing, but finishing it off against this team was a challenge and the Flyers completed it.
Bottom Line
Carrying a three-game winning streak into a difficult back-to-back with Chicago and Nashville this weekend is huge. The Flyers face two uphill tasks, one against a team that managed seven goals against them in their first meeting in October and another against a team with tremendous goaltending that has been piling up goals of late.
Ottawa, by the way, was no slouch of a team either. Sure, they were playing without the likes of Bobby Ryan due to injury and Craig Anderson went on personal leave before this game so their top goalie was out as well, but the Sens have been the league surprise to an extent, sitting in second place in the Atlantic Division. The Flyers got an up-close look at how this team doesn't quit in their visit to Philadelphia just over two weeks earlier. On Thursday, they finished the job.
There is some motivation now heading into this weekend. A winning streak can bring out the best in a team and if the Flyers could get a win over one of these teams and potentially make it a three-point weekend, that would really say a lot about where this team has come over the last month.
