The Flyers ensured that a young piece of the lineup will be around for years to come.

Forward Sean Couturier has signed a multi-year extension with the Flyers, worth $25.8 million over six years. The deal carries an AAV of $4.33 million. Couturier's cap hit in 2015-16 will be $3.75 million.

Couturier was the eighth overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft. As he is about to enter his fifth NHL season, he earned the support of GM Ron Hextall when Hextall discussed Couturier’s age as a reason the Flyers may not be at the elite level just yet, hinting that he expects big things from the center.

Though he is much better known for his defensive ability, especially on the penalty kill, the Flyers are likely looking for an offensive increase.

Couturier scored 15 goals and added 21 assists in 82 games last season. While his 15 goals were a career-high, Couturier’s career-high in points came in 2013-14, when he registered 39 in 82 games.

The 22-year-old recently helped Canada claim the gold medal at this year’s World Championship, picking up six points in 10 games.
